COMPETITOR STORY – MARTY WARD

A regular look at some of the inspirational stories from some of our amazing DB Maxers……

This week it’s Marty Ward who took part in the Castle Combe 10k with us.

“My Dad Roger sadly lost his 3 year battle with Metastatic Melanoma back in October last year. During his treatment I have ran for a number of cancer charities to raise awareness of the research and work they do.

Dad used to love it when I took my medals from races and told him about the courses and sights I’d seen. It was always great to see his face light up when I walked through the door after a race and handed the medal over. Even more so after completing the Berlin Marathon 3 weeks before he passed.

During the last few weeks of his life Sue Ryder visited the house daily to help my Mum care for Dad, they even provided overnight carers for 3 nights to allow us to get some decent rest and be in a better state to look after him more. Even after he passed the team at Leckhampton Court have been amazing, checking in on Mum from time to time and offering support when needed.

This has led to me setting up the “Run for Rog” Challenge which consists of me taking part in a different race every month for the whole of 2020. They vary in distance from 10km right up-to Marathon (Liverpool Marathon on the 24th May). I took part in the Linda Franks 5 mile race in January, have a 20km race in Berkeley in March and then the Westonbirt Half in April.

All funds raised are going to Leckhampton Court as a thank you for the great work they have done and can continue doing for other families. ”
